D.C. Trip

Remember my awesome friend, Adrianne, who I visited in Naples, Italy earlier this year?

Well her and her husband’s jobs moved them back to Washington, D.C. this summer. Never having been there and needing a solid girls’ weekend, I flew up on Saturday evening to visit my long-time friend.

After seeing her precious home in the Adams Morgan neighborhood, I was in love!

Saturday night was ridiculous. Three of Adrianne’s girlfriends came over, and we got our drink on.

We had a blast, but our night made the next morning kind of rough.

Adrianne and I took a City Running Tour around D.C.

I was not at all impressed by the information provided in the tour. When I give a tour of Atlanta, I know a ridiculous amount of information about all the sights along the route, and in between attractions or buildings, I give the participants an overview of Atlanta’s history. On the D.C. tour, the guide basically knew one sentence about each monument we passed. When I asked her when the Lincoln Monument was built (a reasonable question, no?), the guide said she didn’t know the answer, and she is usually encouraged to make something up since the participant wouldn’t know the difference. Wow. …Anyways, Adrianne and I still had fun and were able to run past some amazing sights!

After our 6 mile tour, we ate a delicious brunch, then hit up the botanical garden.

Then we headed to an awesome market with tons of goodies!

Homemade Pop-tarts = Yum!

Apples!

We also hit up a running store in Georgetown.

The guys working there were fantastic, and they even gave me a D.C. running t-shirt! :)

One of the absolute biggest highlights of my trip was running the Capitol Crescent trail along the river while Adrianne rollerbladed ahead of me.

I even ran into Maryland!

I ran a total of 8 miles at an easy (!!!) 8 min/mile pace.

Here are a few other photos from the weekend…

D.C. is such a wonderful walking city (unlike Atlanta), full of wonderful scenery, restaurants, coffee shops, and historic landmarks. Love!

Have you ever been to D.C.?

  1. You cut all your hair off!!! It’s adorable. :) Can’t believe that guide thought it was ok to give you a running tour with so little information and admitting that she makes stuff up. DC sure is pretty in the fall though.

  2. I love DC – you’re right about how walk-able it is (and how Atlanta is NOT).

You had my two hang over cures – a good run and an apple. All better, right?!

I actually walked around Atlanta to run errands today, and it wasn’t that bad! The worst part is there’s only one, linear way to get everywhere (Peachtree St). Run + apple = hangover perfection!

  3. I loved DC when I was there. My dad took me as a graduation present when I graduated from college. The first day there we walked around almost all the Smithsonian buildings and then finished the day by walking down the entire mall to the Lincoln Memorial only to discover that the closest Metro stop was 5-7 blocks away. Our feet were quite sore by the end of that day. :D

By the way, your hair looks absolutely incredible! It is such a good cut for you!

I was extremely excited when you posted that Montgomery County sign on facebook because I know exactly where that is and have run past it many times.

Did you get to go any of the restaurants that I recommended?

  5. Jen says:

Love you hair cut, clearly I missed som post of to read!

Making up facts how odd. I have considered doing a running tour in Seattle just for fun. Even though I live here it would be fun to see the ins and outs of the place.

  6. Mark says:

Glad you had a good time in DC. Btw, the Lincoln Memorial took 7 years to build, construction began in 1915. ;)

  7. I’ve been to DC once, and actually the adams morgan area! My favorite part was having a wine picnic in the middle of the mall.

  8. Looks like a great tour! I really enjoy walking tours, but I’ve never done a running one before.

  9. Brooke says:

I’ve never been to DC, but looks like you had a great trip! Sometimes, you just need a girls weekend :) What a bummer about that running tour–I mean, making stuff up about NATIONAL Monuments?? Very strange……..glad you had fun either way!

I hope that one day (soon) I can say that 8min/mile is an easy pace for me. I’m currently at about 8:20ish..so i’m getting there.

I’ve never been to D.C. – I’m not even sure that I would like to go – I don’t do big cities or big crowds of people – I get all anxious and stressed out. I do enjoy looking at other people’s photos though.

That is really horrible that they would hire someone to do a running tour that knows so little about such a historic city.. ..and even worse that they recommend she lie.

I was in DC in Septebmer – and would have loved a running tour! I had my kiddos with me and it was beautiful! Looks like you had a fantastic time.
